KOB Helps to “REMEMBER THE CHILDREN"
The steps below the Lincoln Memorial were adorned with thousands of roses, a gift from Ecuador. More than 50 ambassadors, dignitaries and religious leaders from all around the world were escorted to their seats while last-minute touches were addressed. The entertainers and speakers rehearsed while school aged children and other audience members patiently waited.
On October 11, 2001, exactly one month after the terrorist attacks on the United States, Remember the Children: An Event about Children, for Children and by Children was held in Washington, D.C. The event was presented by World Vision and many other sponsoring agencies.
Ten rallying points were introduced that represented the basic principles that will better the lives of all children. The Kids on the Block (KOB) International Headquarters staff was highly honored when asked to participate. Puppet characters Nam Nygun and Valerie Perkins presented rallying point five, stop harming and exploiting children, by performing a small vignette and singing “Part of the Family” from the KOB audio cassette, C'mon Along We All Belong. Puppet character Brenda Dubrowski sat among the honored guests. Other rallying points were presented by children, adults or both depending upon the particular message.
The event also included performances by Kathy Lee Gifford, who also hosted the event, David Friedman, The Calvert School of Dance and the Duke Ellington School for the Arts Choir. The president of World Vision, Richard Stearn, affirmed that the event was "to honor those who were killed on September 11 by showing children in America, and back in their own countries, that the world's commitment to children has not been destroyed, but has grown even stronger."
