Program Revisions
The following Kids on the Block Programs have been revised. Revised curriculum guides are available to KOB associates who already own the programs. Please call for pricing information.
Sexuality and Teenage Pregnancy
The Kids on the Block program on Teenage Pregnancy has been revised and renamed Sexuality and Teenage Pregnancy. The curriculum guide contains new and updated script material, updated character biographies, questions and answers, follow-up activities and a resource list.
The original program had four scripts that were intended to be presented as a one hour play. The revised version offers six separate scripts that can be performed individually to convey the most suitable information for your audience. “Boys and Girls” focuses on self-esteem and the difficulties males and females face during early adolescence. “Myths about Motherhood” addresses the challenges facing a teen mother and encourages positive decision-making skills. “Learning to Talk” focuses on communication among males and dispelling the myth that everyone is sexually active. “A Father for Charlotta” examines the relationship of two teen parents and the challenges they have to face. “Parents and Kids” emphasizes the need for open communication between parents and children concerning sexuality and relationships. “Dads in Training,” a brand new script, focuses on the importance of a father’s involvement in his child’s life and examines one type of support group that can benefit young fathers.
Epilepsy
The Kids on the Block program on Epilepsy, featuring Brian McDaniel, has been revised. The revised curriculum features updated character biographies, questions and answers, follow-up activities and a resource list.
There is one revised script, “Brian Has a Seizure,” from the original program which demonstrates seizure first aid procedures and emphasizes the importance of open, supportive friendships. The remaining three scripts are brand new. “Caesar’s Seizures” defines epilepsy and examines some other issues surrounding seizure disorders, including learning disabilities. This script also explains that there are various types of seizures and that each person’s experience with epilepsy is different. The script, “The Law of the Band,” examines issues of discrimination and fairness and introduces some elementary information about disability rights laws. “Playin’ It Safe” provides younger children with a basic understanding of seizures and describes some safety precautions that are important for children with and without epilepsy.
KOB associates who purchased the original program on epilepsy should have received a letter announcing the update and describing some prop additions. Those troupes with the puppet character Ricky Miller should also have received information about the change in that character’s status. If your troupe has the old program but has not received an update letter or if you have any questions, please call our office at 1-800-368-KIDS (5437).
