Hear Kids on the Block staff discuss the sexual abuse prevention
program on the Internet Radio Program Breaking the Conspiracy of Silence.
Several years earlier, when she was ten, fourteen-year-old Joanne
Spinoza was molested by her
mother's boyfriend. "He brought me presents and took me places. My mom
and I trusted him. But
he used my trust to trick me!" says Joanne who describes the incident
and talks about how she
told
and how she and her mother got the counseling help they needed to help
them through this
difficult
situation. Developed in conjunction with Parents Anonymous, Arlington
County Child
Protective
Services and with help from the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children, JOANNE
made her debut at the Annual Migrant Head Start Conference in San
Antonio, Texas in 1984. The
package consists of large hand-crafted puppets, scripts, props, and
follow-up activities and
resources
to form a comprehensive curriculum on the topic. Joanne serves as
model for children who may have
experienced abuse–they learn not only how to tell, but how to persist
in the telling when
obstacles
are put in their paths–while the personal safety information she and
her friends provide encourages every child to talk to a trusted adult
any time a situation feels strange or uncomfortable. There are
three main scripts in the program. One general script focuses on
personal safety information and is appropriate for elementary/primary
school audiences while the remaining two scripts focus on Joanne's
experience and are most appropriate for older elementary/primary
audiences. Three additional mini-scripts are also included and
are best used with younger audiences. Script
material covers general personal safety information as well as specific
issues such as the betrayal of trust as a factor in abuse, learning how
to
tell
and tricks that abusive adults might use. Mini-script topics
include
knowing emergency telephone numbers, your own number and area code,
staying away from
strangers and the use of an emergency plan.
