When Stephen learned that discipline in his friends' homes meant time-outs or a loss of privileges, he began to understand that the cuts and bruises he received from his mom was a sign that there was something wrong.
Developed with assistance from various child welfare organizations, the Kids on the Block Program on Physical Abuse features puppet character, Stephen Arthurs, a ten year old boy who took steps to help himself and his mom by disclosing about his abuse. Script material discusses the difference between discipline and abuse, how and who to tell, Stephen's love for his mother and family therapy as an appropriate course of action for a family in trouble.
The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets,
four scripts, props,
follow-up activities and resources to teach children about physical
abuse prevention.
