Featuring: Andy Dunn, Daniel Cole and Melody James
Melody is shocked to learn that her friend Andy’s stand-up act for
the school talent show will center around his experience with a brain
tumor. He calls it “tumor humor.” Melody protests that such
a serious topic doesn’t sound funny. But Andy suggests that she
lighten up, explaining, “Having a brain tumor is scary and
serious, but if I were serious and scared all the time, I’d lose
it! Laughing and telling jokes is fun!”
The Kids on the Block Program on Pediatric Brain Tumors was
developed in conjunction with a major cancer treatment center. The program
features 11 year old Andy Dunn, who was diagnosed with
medulloblastoma. Script material addresses the social and
emotional impact of pediatric brain tumors, informs about possible
cognitive changes resulting from these tumors and their treatment,
challenges myths and misconceptions about brain tumors, and provides
some details about treatment.
The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets,
three scripts, follow-up activities, and resources.
