OSTOMY
A KIDS ON THE BLOCK PROGRAM ON
OSTOMY
Featuring: Joanne Spinoza, Gary Glover and Clare Sanchez
"A collection pouch. What, do you collect rocks or something?"
exclaims 14 year old Joanne Spinoza when her friend Clare Sanchez tells
her about her ostomy. Clare, also 14 years old, explains she had
ulcerative colitis which led to her ILEOSTOMY last year and to her use
of a collection pouch. Ten year old Gary Glover was born with a
partially
formed bladder so a UROSTOMY was performed to divers urine outside of
his
body to a collection pouch as well. Both Clare and Gary talk
openly
and honestly about the myths and misconceptions surrounding
ostomies.
In addition, they encourage children who have had ostomies to feel
proud
and happy about their bodies, and for children who do not have this
condition
to be understanding and accepting of those who do.
The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets, four
scripts (two for ileostomy, two for urostomy), "discussion starters"
for
use by therapists who work with children who are about to have ostomy
surgery,
follow-up activities, and resources. In addition to the sponsors
of the program, advice on the topic was gathered from children and
adults
who have ostomies, as well as the professionals who work with
them.
Script material covers specific issues such as descriptions of stomas
and
collection pouches, sports, clothing, friendships and talking openly
about
this difference.
