January is the start of a new year.
Let's make it a HEALTHY one!
THE KIDS ON THE
BLOCK PROGRAMS ON

HEALTHY
EATING
and
COMBATING CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Did
you know that:
- Some experts estimate that nearly 69% of U.S. adults are
overweight or obese. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
National Center for Health Statistics, Nov., 2011) This alarming
trend is perceived to be responsible for many health problems which
could conceivably shorten the life span of the overweight
person.
- Children are also growing larger. Obesity now affects 17%
of all children and adolescents in the United States - triple the rate
from just one generation ago. (Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics,
Nov., 2011)
- Overweight and obesity result from an energy imbalance.
This involves eating too many calories and not getting enough physical
activity.
- Body weight is the result of genes, metabolism, behavior,
environment, culture, and socioeconomic status.
- Behavior and environment play a large role causing people to be
overweight and obese. These are the greatest areas for prevention and
treatment actions. (U.S. Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent
and Decrease Overweight and Obesity, 2001)
- For kids, eating healthy means finding the right balance between
good foods and not so good foods. Educating kids about proper
nutrition is the first step in putting them on the right path. (Jill
Corleone, R.D - Read more:

Give
children in YOUR community the tools they need to make healthier
choices!
The Kids on the
Block Program on Healthy Eating is designed to encourage
children to practice healthy eating by trying new foods which can add
greater nutrition and flavor to a person’s diet, explore how food and
drink affect all parts of the body including skin, teeth,
energy levels and brain power and promote limiting junk foods by eating
them in moderation and with proper planning.
The Kids on the
Block Program on Combating Childhood Obesity and Overweight
encourages the prevention of health problems through discussion of
possible causes and effects of unhealthy lifestyles, promotes
sensitivity, understanding and acceptance of differences in body types
while encouraging children (and adults) to set realistic goals and
achieve them through small changes, promotes thinking of food as fuel
for one's body and encourages children to increase daily physical
movement by participating in fun activities and making more active
choices during their free time.
Puppet characters, Jason Robinson and
Brenda Dubrowski appear in both programs which are designed to
complement one another while exploring aspects of each topic.
Michal Riley rounds out the cast of Healthy Eating, while Zach
Jones and Jason's dad are featured in Combating Obesity.
