When Carrie's mother has to take Shane to therapy, forgetting her promise to drive Carrie and her friends to the skating rink, Carrie feels frustrated and irritated. Together, Carrie and her grandfather, Pete, discuss the challenges of having a sibling with a disability. (Carrie, Pete)
Shane has been planning a camping trip for his scout troop for six months. As the camping trip gets closer, Shane's mother expresses her doubts about allowing him to go. Shane feels frustrated by his mother's overprotectiveness. With the help of his grandfather, Pete, he tries to strike a balance between his mother's concerns and his own need for independence. (Shane, Pete)
Nam has made a list of things he has decided to do to help Shane this year at school. When Shane learns about Nam's plans, he explains to his friend that he can often do things for himself, but that if he does need help, he will ask. (Shane, Nam)
