THE KIDS ON THE BLOCK PROGRAM ON

Muscular Dystrophy

Featuring: (l to r) Carrie Davis, Pete Whetstone, Shane Davis and Nam Nguyen

Nam returns from summer vacation to find his friend, Shane, using a wheelchair. Nam expects Shane to be upset, so he is surprised when Shane explains his real feelings about this important change. "I'm glad I have my wheels," Shane says. "The kind of muscular dystrophy I have means my muscles get weaker as I get older. My wheels are helping me get to where I REALLY want to go!"

The Kids on the Block Program on Muscular Dystrophy was developed in conjunction with the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada and features 10 year old Shane Davis, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Script material covers relevant issues including an explanation of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the needs of the affected child's siblings, and coping with friends' reactions to the progression of Duchenne. The program also explores parental overprotectiveness and encourages children to communicate with their families.

The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets, four scripts, props, follow-up activities, and resources.
