Fire Safety and Prevention

Script Scenarios

Fired Up About Fire Prevention

When Joanne finds some discarded matches, Melody warns her not to touch them.  Melody then addresses the concept, "Fire is a tool, not a toy."  This leads to a discussion about fire prevention for Joanne and the audience.  (Melody, Joanne)

Playing with Fire

When Melody and Renaldo are pretending to be forest rangers, one of their adventures includes having Renaldo's aunt make  popcorn the "old fashioned way," on the stove.  Renaldo's aunt heats oil in a pan, but then forgets about it. Soon Melody and Renaldo smell smoke and are faced with what to do when a kitchen (grease) fire occurs.  (Melody, Renaldo)

What to Do in Case of a Fire

Melody and Renaldo demonstrate what to do when a fire starts in the home.  During a pretend scenario, Melody and Renaldo are awakened by shouts of "Fire!"  The children then role play the steps for escaping a building fire and review those steps with the audience. (Melody, Renaldo, Joanne)

Stop, Drop and Roll

In this lively song (cassette and lyrics included), Joanne and Melody teach what to do if a person's clothing and/or body catch on fire. They invite the audience to participate in singing and acting out the song. (Joanne, Melody)

NOTE: After each script the children interact with the puppet characters by answering review questions about the topics presented.
