Puppet characters for KOB Program on Emergency Preparedness

THE KIDS ON THE BLOCK PROGRAM ON

Emergency Preparedness

Featuring: Brenda Dubrowski and Melody James

When their teacher gives the class an assignment about safety topics, Brenda is surprised to learn that her best friend Melody is planning to do a project about emergency preparedness. Melody explains her choice, “Emergency preparedness is a lot like wearing a helmet whenever you ride your bike or buckling your seat belt every time you ride in a car.” Soon, Brenda gets involved when she learns how kids can contribute to family preparedness.

The Kids on the Block Program on Emergency Preparedness was developed in conjunction with the Baltimore County Department of Health. The program features fifth graders Melody James and Brenda Dubrowski. Script material addresses the importance of preparing for emergencies, the necessary contents of an emergency
kit, children’s role in preparedness, the range of emotions associated with crisis situations, and strategies for addressing those feelings.

The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets, two scripts, props, follow-up activities, and resources to teach children about preparing for emergencies and coping with anxious feelings which may arise when faced with uncertain situations.
