Featuring: Nam Nguyen, Valerie Perkins, Joanne Spinoza and Daniel Cole
Culture is the filter through which we view the world. It can connect us to others and give us a unique sense of power. Culture reveals itself in complex things such as religious beliefs, or simple things like leisure activities. Culture may provide models on which we base many of our beliefs, likes, dislikes, and interactions with others.
The Kids on the Block Program on Multiculturalism is designed to examine how a person might find examples of culture in his or her own life and explore some of the conflicts which may arise when people of varying backgrounds and belief systems come together. The curriculum is designed to explain and define the concept of culture. The scripts address issues such as, feeling torn between two distinct cultures, identifying one's own culture, challenging gender bias, stereotyping, and learning about holidays.
The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets,
five scripts, props,
follow-up activities and resources to teach children about cultural
issues.
