Featuring: Jamie Higgins and Melody James
The Kids on the Block Script about Bereavement is intended to be a catalyst for discussion about this most sensitive issue and to assure children who are grieving that their feelings and thoughts are “normal.”
In this special mini-curriculum, Jamie Higgins is grieving the death of her mother. Jamie’s friend, Melody James, has a lot of insight because her brother was killed in a car crash two years ago. Melody and Jamie represent two children who are at different points in the grieving process. Through these two characters, different aspects of bereavement are addressed. The script emphasizes the importance of communicating the various feelings associated with loss and demonstrates coping skills children may employ when experiencing a personal tragedy. The exchange between the characters also models supportive friendships and promotes sensitivity toward peers experiencing a loss. The script is designed to be used with children going through the grieving process and for audiences with some prior knowledge of grief and loss. It is not intended for general audiences.
This script was developed with the support of Minit Mart Foods,
Inc. of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Mr. Fred Higgins, in memory of
Jamie Gaddie Higgins, a founding member of Bowling Green Kids on the
Block and a talented, dedicated puppeteer.
