The Kids on the Block Program on Aging features Mary Margaret Riley, an active woman of 73 years who is recovering from a stroke. Her grandson, Michael, is curious and upset about some of the changes in his grandmother's life, including her slurred speech and use of a walker. Michael is also surprised to learn that Mary Margaret and his scout leader, 75 year-old Pete Whetstone, are good friends who enjoy a variety of activities together. Through Pete, Michael sees his grandmother in a new light and begins to let go of his misconceptions about growing older.
The Kids on the Block Program on Aging was developed under the guidance of the University of Maryland's Center on Aging, Washington Hospital Center, the National Council on the Aging, and the National Council on Senior Citizens. Script materials cover information about strokes, myths about aging, and how stereotypes can create distance between older and younger people.
The complete curriculum consists of large hand-crafted puppets, five
scripts, follow-up activities, and resources.
