of child
abuse or neglect in 2004. The rate of victimization per 1,000 children
in the national population has dropped from 12.3 children
in 2002 to
11.9 children in 2004.

general population. NCANDS defines "child fatality" as the death of a
child caused by an injury resulting from abuse or neglect, or where
abuse or neglect were contributing factors.
