Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung airways that causes coughing, chest tightness, wheezing or shortness of breath.  Asthma can develop at any age.
Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease of children; it  accounts for 1/4 of school absenteeism.  Schools can help decrease this significantly by taking proactive steps in increasing personnel and student awareness of asthma and allergens.
Asthma affects children in varying degrees, from very mild (only during vigorous exercise) to very severe.  Children with severe asthma may have symptoms daily that may cause some lifestyle restriction.

Children and adults die each year from asthma.  However, with adequate precautions and treatments most deaths from asthma can be prevented.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM:

This program is intended for children grades three through six and consists of five scripts.  The script, Karate Kid, defines asthma and dispels myths about the condition and what people with it can do.  An Almost Unhappy Birthday explores the frustration a child can feel at moments when an asthma episode intrudes on everyday activities.

Camping Supplies examines asthma management and preparation for being away from home.  Don't Miss Out explains the importance of adhering to an asthma action plan to enable full participation in school and other activities.  Allergy Buffet introduces basic food allergy information and discusses some of the precautions necessary to avoid a reaction.
